The Defeated or Shadowplay is a show about an American cop (police) who arrives in Berlin in the year 1946 and that was the summertime of 1946. Max McLaughlin (an American cop) went there to help in creating a force of police in the chaotic aftermath of the war. The city of Berlin was occupied by four different military forces (Russian, American, British, and French), and it was divided into sectors.

As Berlin’s people are trying to get by and reconstruct the city, the Berlin Police, working on the American sector, is trying to tackle the serious problems that come to the situation, like the brutally and high rape cases inflicted on German women from men belonging to the foreign troops. One police officer(Max McLaughlin) from New York City comes to Berlin to help this Berlin police team get organized, while he also searches for his real brother who is missing since fighting in the war.
